Pinterest is a powerful visual search engine, but the success of your pins relies heavily on the accompanying text that’s included in your pin titles and descriptions. What does that actually mean? The success of your pins, the chances of your pins getting seen, depends on the keywords that you’re using and the places that you’re using those keywords.
Keywords are used in 9 different places on Pinterest, but the most important place to put keywords is in your pin title and description.
If you’re wondering how to write Pinterest descriptions that drive traffic, increase engagement, and boost your content’s visibility, I am here to help. Let’s dive into the strategies and tips for writing Pinterest descriptions that actually get your pins seen!
1. Understand Your Audience
Before writing any Pinterest description, think about who your target audience is. What are they searching for? What language do they use? By tailoring your pin descriptions to your audience’s preferences, you’ll increase the likelihood of your pin being discovered and clicked on. Always remember, the way you describe your business and your product might not be the way others are searching for it. Keyword research is KEY!
2. Incorporate Keywords Naturally
Pinterest’s algorithm functions like a search engine, so using relevant keywords is essential. Research keywords that relate to your pins and the corresponding content and incorporate them naturally into your descriptions. For example, if your pin is about “easy under sink cabinet organization” include keywords that not only relate to organization, the space that is being organized but also the type of organization, to capture more search queries.
3. Highlight the Value
If you’re asking yourself what to put in your Pinterest description - this is IT.
Your Pinterest description should communicate why your content is valuable. Explain what users will learn, gain, or achieve by clicking your pin. For instance, if you’re sharing a guide on Best Wedding Vendors in your city, mention that it includes actionable tips for making wedding planning easy and stress free. What is your audience’s desire?
4. Avoid Keyword Stuffing
While keywords are essential to getting your pins seen on Pinterest, overloading your description with them—a practice known as keyword stuffing—can harm readability and turn off potential viewers.
Focus on writing Pinterest descriptions that flow naturally and provide value while seamlessly integrating keywords.
Keep in mind, how often have you actually read a Pinterest description? These are mostly to feed the algorithm but using naturally flowing sentences is important.
For example: Here are my favorite easy home organization tips using my amazon must haves for home organization NOT just simple putting amazon must haves for home organization, home organizers are us, home organizer life, home organizing tips.
5. Include a Call to Action (CTA)
Encourage users to click on your pin by adding a strong call to action.
Using common call-to-action phrases like:
Click to learn more
Find out how
Save this for later

Are all great CTAs that can inspire action and drive traffic to your content. You can also add these where appropriate to your Pin designs.
6. Know your limits
Did you know Pinterest recently changed the amount of characters allowed for a Pinterest description? It used to be 500 characters and now the limit has increased to 800 characters! Use those keywords strategically.
One tip from me: Iif you’re nervous about knowing if you are over the limit, type them out in a Google doc and use the Word Count tool.
